The German existentialist philosopher Nietzsche once wrote, "Without music, life would be a mistake." I couldn't agree more.
Music in all its forms is my muse and inspiration. No matter where I am or what I doing, I try to have music playing. It is the language that everyone speaks, and with it and through it there are no barriers. Music is an emotional release and a friend who will never abandon you. Music takes you to a place that nothing else does. In praise, here are some (only a scant few) of the albums and artists who have provided me kinship in the dark, alone, while I write.
Depeche Mode: Violator, Music for the Masses, Songs of Faith & Devotion, Exciter (particularly 'Dead of Night.')
Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Fixed, the Downward Spiral, Further Down the Spiral. The soundtrack to my teenage years. I'm on my fifth copy of the Downward Spiral.
A Perfect Circle
Tool: Opiate, Undertow, Aenima, some of Lateralus
Misfts: When you're writing about serial killers, nothing compares to 'Last Caress', or any other Misfits song, for that matter.
Alice in Chains
Hole: Live Through This
7 Year Bitch
Sisters of Mercy
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Guns 'n Roses
Mad Season: Above
Otep: Sevas Tra
The Crow: Motion Picture Soundtrack
Johnny Cash American Records Recordings
Pearl Jam: Ten, Vs.
Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes
Operation Ivy: "All I know is that I don't know nothing!"
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Even though it has nothing to do with the murder cases, I listened to CCR's 'Green River' ad nauseum while writing the Green River killer article. It took on a whole new spooky meaning for me, especially the line about "barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight."
Patsy Cline 'Walking After Midnight': Another artist/song that is not meant to be creepy, but takes on a whole new sinister shine when I hear it. It's themes of walking alone, after dark, searching for someone, triggered something in the dark recesses of my brain.
Slayer: Because you can't write about Ed Gein without having 'Dead Skin Mask' on in the background.
Avenged Sevenfold: Music to go on a rampage to!
Along with music, I am also a fan of many different artists, from the dark whimsy of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton to the erotic otherworldliness of Dorian Clevenger and the cheesecake of Olivia deBeradinis. I am also a big fan of comic and comic-style art, particularly Brad Overstreet (check out the Vampire: The Masquerade clan books) and Ben Templesmith (see the Dark Days, 30 Days of Nights, and Hellspawn comics), and Dave McKean's Sandman work. The following are links to a few of my favorite artists.
Olivia De Berardinis
"If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. - Henry Rollins
If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on forgotten walls.
I will write always.
I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you."
- Henry Rollins
